CAMILLE

The man yelled at her when she was slow putting the blindfold on. He said she should get off the bed and sing a song with them, but she stayed curled in a ball. She stuck a finger into each of her ears and kept writing her newest story, which was about a girl who hunted dinosaur bones in Michigan. People didn’t think there had ever been dinosaurs there so they didn’t believe her at first, until she took a big bone into the Dennos Museum in Traverse City and the person there in charge of accepting displays was so overwhelmed he got tears in his eyes. The next day her name was in the newspaper and the phone was ringing with calls from bigger newspapers saying they wanted to print her story …

He pulled her hair until she fell off the end of the bed and hit the floor so hard it knocked the breath out of her. The other person, who smelled of awful perfume, screamed like a woman, saying that he was too stupid to do anything right and he’d done it again … or something like that, but she didn’t pay a lot of attention because her back hurt. She crawled up on the bed. The other person was still yelling at him and Cammy heard somebody get up and go back up the ladder. The man followed behind saying he was sorry this one wasn’t right either and the other person said, “What would you know? She was my sister!”

And then they were gone with the metal door clanking shut behind them.

She undid the blindfold and lay down, making her breath get back to normal. She thought about climbing the ladder and trying to push that door open, but knew it wasn’t any use. The man—who said his name was James, but she knew that wasn’t right because the other one called him a different name when she got mad—always pushed something heavy on top of the door. It wouldn’t budge. It never budged when she tried it.

But at least she had half the dish of hard candy left. They forgot to bring meatloaf.

“That’s the way it is . . .” she sang as she sucked slowly on a candy.
